Two School for Science and Math at Vanderbilt juniors, Catherine Caffey and Emily Alsentzer, are finalists in the Siemens We Can Change The World Challenge. The Siemens Challenge encourages student teams from elementary, middle, and high schools to develop and promote environmental solutions that may be applied throughout the world. Catherine and Emily’s project involved implementing an energy conservation competition among the freshman residential houses at Vanderbilt to examine the effect of a non-monetary reward in altering environmental behaviors. VU freshmen saved Vanderbilt approximately $10,000 in 5 months (a reduction in energy usage of 3.5%). Catherine and Emily had the top ranked project in the state and one of only 24 projects chosen as finalists throughout the country. Grand prize winners will be announced on or around May 18.
